She was startled awake by the irritating scratch of a flea bite behind her ear. She reached her back leg up to her head and thumped it wildly in attempt to rid herself of the pest. When it no longer bothered her, she groaned, standing up onto four, shaky limbs. Stretching, she could already feel the warmth of blood flowing into her muscles as she shook out the morning dew from her thick, curled fur. She looked up into the sky, where the pinks and oranges were making their ways across the clouds. It was a beautiful day in every way, so why did Shaire feel like it was going to be miserable?
She trotted her way over to the river. She always liked to start off the day by making sure she was clean, of course, it also helped her rid herself of those damned bugs. She paused at the edge of the river, peering down into her smeared reflection. She grumbled at it. For once, she wished that water would stay still enough for her to see her own appearance. she stepped into the water as a wave of chills traveled through her paw and up to her spine. She didn't mind the cold water. In fact, she found it quite refreshing.
Not wanting to wait any longer, she leaped into the river, feeling the rush of cold water go over her head as her bottom hit the sand. She kicked once to rejoin with the surface, and took in a deep breath, gasping because of the cold her body had just experienced. Her long lashes forced the water from her eyes so she could see without having to blink too much. In no time at all, her fur was drenched, and she began to shiver from the cold. Deciding it needed to warm up before doing that again, she crawled out from the river, shaking slightly, but not much minding it. When all four paws were back on dry land, she shook the water from her fur, making it fluff out even further.
The wind seemed to be different than usual...it made her feel..colder. Soon, she realized she was shivering quite a bit, and decided to sit in the sun. She found a nice patch of sun labled grass and lay down, stretching out her tired limbs as the sun soaked into her fur. She found herself thinking about things, remembering the past and wondering about the future. It had seemed so long ago since she last saw her mother, or heard about her father. It was almost like a dream, or like it was somebody else's life. With her eyes closed, she tried to re-imagine what it was like...
She remembered how soft her mother's fur felt...like lush, forgiving grass in the middle of spring. She thought she heard her mother's voice, a calming, sweet sound. It always made her feel safe, and happy too. She wondered how her mother was doing now, since she was no longer there to take care of her. She felt odd. She was four, and yet, this moment made her feel like she was a pup again, drinking from her mother's milk, and being warmed by her soft underbelly fur. When she opened her eyes, she was startled. She had forgotten where she was, and who she was, for a moment there.
With a sigh, she turned over onto her back, looking up at the sky, and blinking when the sun hit her eyes just right. It was so calm today, besides the ever darkening skies. Honestly, she didn't like it. It didn't feel natural to her. She closed her eyes again, and felt herself drift off into slumber...

The future is irrelevant ~
The world was a dark place, but Kaige had known this for what seemed like forever. When he experienced the vision with the gruesome attack, that was when he knew. When his parents and packmates tossed it aside like it was nothing, like he was just making it up, that was when he knew. When the attack happen, that was when he knew. Experiencing joy and happiness, then having it all taken away, that was when he knew. There were many occurances he had gone through that continued to confirm his beliefs that the world was a dark place. Not matter how hard he tried, he could never win thus being the reason why he just didn't care anymore. He was stuck roaming this dark world for eternity. He was never going to die. The thought would have bothered him years ago, but he taught himself to not care. He taught himself to not feel anything anymore. He taught himself to keep others out. He would not allow himself to get close to others. He would not allow himself to trust others. He would not allow himself to feel anything for anyone. He would not allow himself to be beaten and broken once again; he had had enough of that. He had shut himself down. He was an empty shell, a lost soul doomed to a life of solitude, but solitude was something he knew well.
There was no chance of him falling in love again. Love was all overrated anyway. It seemed like everyone these days needed to be with someone just so they could be happy. Even when they were miserable, even when they've had enough, they still search for it because they fear being alone. They've convinced themselves they need that other half to complete themselves. They need that other half to be happy. What they needed to realize was they didn't need anyone. No one could truly make them happy except for themselves. Only they had the power to do that. Not having anyone didn't mean the world was going to end. To him, it just meant you were content with yourself. You were content with being alone, or maybe you were one of the smart ones who realized you didn't need someone to make your life complete. He didn't really know, nor did he really care. All these thoughts of love caused him to think back, way back, into the past. It was something he wished to keep hidden, something he wished to forget about, but it came back to him every now and then no matter how hard he tried to push it all away. He just didn't want to remember anymore. Why couldn't he just forget everything?
First there was Velia. Things seemed perfect at first. They got along great and had a grand ol' time. It was the first time he had experienced happiness since the day of the attack. But something had happened to make her leave in the middle of the night, leaving him alone to wonder what he had done wrong. He was left to live a solitude for the next few years before coming across the next one, Shinrin. He didn't want to feel anything at first having remembered his experience with Velia, but one couldn't control their feelings no matter how hard they tried. He didn't really know what went wrong with Shinrin. She, like Velia, took off. But, unlike Velia, she came back only to leave again sometime later. He remembered dying and coming back as something completely different. Kali was there then. He knew her intentions weren't good at first, but something must have happened to change her mind. He wasn't too sure about her at first, but once again, he had gotten himself tangled up in love. It seemed like he had finally found the one for him until Shinrin came back, again, and sent him spiraling in confusion. Both of them had left afterward and he was once again left to live a life of solitude. It would be another few years before he came across Kali and rekindled the flame. Then Velia showed up. And then Shinrin showed up. He was blinded by confusion and mild anger. Why would they all come back then?
He never had much time to think about it due to Thanatos, the one wolf who had caused the attack, came to finish what he started years ago. They both fought to the death and Kaige, finally thinking everything was taken care of, was dead. Unfortunately for him, he didn't stay dead. Shinrin had brought him back and he wasn't pleased. He wanted to stay dead. He didn't want to solve his problems. He wanted the easy way out. He would have ended his life had he not remembered about Kali and he sent off to look for her, only to find that she had moved on. And for the final time, he left to live a life of solitude. He left the lands that held so many memories and ventured off in hopes of getting away from it all, but he was back again. Being back again brought him across Kali... again. He wasn't lingering around this time. He wasn't going to try and make things better. As far as he was concerned, they were done and over with. There was nothing left, so why try and fix something that was bound to fail anyway? But what if... what if they tried? What if they talked it all out and set their differences aside? What if they forgot about the past and started over? "That's not going to happen," Kaige snarled, a little more ferocity in his voice then he intended to be.
Hearing his voice in the silence of the day startled him and shook him from his thoughts and the past. He realized he had ventured far away from the cliff, now being at the river, and frozen in his steps. "When the hell did this happen?" he asked out loud as his crimson eyes raked across the surrounding area. He had been so caught up with his previous thoughts he had forgotten where he was momentairily. With an annoyed shake of his head and low mutterings, he pushed himself forward alongside the river, completely unaware that someone else was in the same area. He was either that oblivious or he just didn't care to notice. With him, it was probably the latter. He planned to keep living his solitary life, away from everyone and everything. But if he wanted that, then why was he here? This place held many memories both good and bad. If he was so intent on getting away from it all, why linger? Perhaps he really did care deep down inside. Maybe he was just in denial.
He really didn't know. [/blockquote]

The scent of an unfamiliar wolf flooded her nostrils and jolted her awake. She jumped to her paws and growled, glancing around vicously for the stranger. It didn't take her long to notice him, he was fairly close. She realized that she had seen this wolf before, sometime before, perhaps when she first joined the pack, and realized he was just another pack member. She stopped her growling and sighed. For once, just for ONCE, couldn't she have some alone time?
Shaire grunted. No matter where she went, she was never alone. Sure, she could have been a lone wolf, but she felt like she wanted to be part of a pack. Still, she just wished she could sun bathe in private. She shook the little remaining water from her white pelt, stretching her legs. She jumped, startled. Silly Shaire. She had forgotton that her own legs were black, unlike the rest of her fur. At first, she thought it was someone else. She rolled her eyes at herself, then looked back up at the other wolf.
He seemed odd. He was obviously trapped in thought. All though she had seen him before, she didn't know him. It felt weird, sharing a pack with strangers. But she didn't care, she was too lazy to get to know everyone in the pack. She slowly approached the other wolf, her paws not making a sound as she nearly glided across the sand and grass. "Excuse me." She spoke up. Her voice was soft and innocent, yet commanding and powerful.
When she looked into his face, it intrigued her. She felt as if she wanted to know this wolf, just like it was important, or something. It was odd that she even felt like she cared, especially when she didn't even know the wolf. "I'm sorry...but.." She was about to ask him to leave, but she changed her mind. "I don't know you. I mean, we are in the same pack, but, I don't even know your name."

The future is irrelevant ~ The voice of another wolf interrupted his thought process. When his head snapped around, he was nearly startled to see the owner of the voice almost up in his face. "What the hell?" he questioned, sounding rather irritated as he regained his composure. How had he not noticed someone else was here? He had to have been really out of it, or just that oblivious to not know. He was beginning to regret thinking back to the past. He was also beginning to regret wandering off in this direction, but there were wolves all over. This was a pack land after all. He needed to leave and he needed to leave soon, but he had the sneaking suspicion he wasn't going to win. The thought bothered him, but he had other things to worry about - like getting away from this female. He hoped she didn't expect him to be friendly with her. He was in no mood to be buddy-buddy with anyone. But then again, when was he ever?
"And I don't know your name," Kaige spoke after a moment, finally breaking the silence between them. "What's your point?" He snorted quietly and averted his gaze, a look on his face saying he had better things to do then sit around here and chit chat. "You and I? We aren't in the same pack. I'm just passing through and you're in my way." He was well aware that he was being rude, but he didn't care. He didn't care about anything these days, not even himself really. "I don't want to be around here and to be honest, it looked like you didn't want me around here anyway. Invading your personal space or something, huh? Not that you can really tell me what to do or where to go anyway even if you wanted to..." His voice drifted off and he fell silent once more. Why was he wasting his time here? What good was he getting out of it? "And I know you're probably thinking I'm being an ass right now. I could easily check, but I'm not going to. Anyway, I'm not going to apologize for the way I am," he added shortly.
If he was so intent on getting away from her and everyone else, why was he lingering? He wasn't gaining anything from standing here and making an ass out of himself, not that he cared about the last part. What was keeping him here? He didn't even know why he was back in these lands in the first place. Was he hoping to find something? Was he hoping to get something? Did he just want to reminisce about the old days, back when they were good? That question caused him to laugh humorlessly out loud. Those days weren't all good. There was always trouble lurking around the corner. To him, it seemed like he just wasn't allowed to be happy. He must have done something wrong to deserve that, but what? Nothing came to mind. But he didn't care anymore, he wasn't trying to find happiness. Happiness could go fuck itself for all he cared. "You know what? I'll just save us both the trouble and leave," he said after awhile, shaking himself from his thoughts once again. He moved on forward without another word. It seemed like she wanted to be alone anyway, and he knew he wasn't one to stick around and have a friendly conversation, so why not leave? Something was bugging him. Maybe he was in denial. Maybe he was just bitter. Or maybe he was just an idiot.
It was probably the latter. [/blockquote]

Shaire rose a brow as he continued to talk, ranting on about how much he didn't like being bothered and all that. He was very, very rude. And it made her smile. She was sure he had been in the pack, but he wasn't. She had to stop assuming things. She walked after him, her footsteps completly silent. She didn't care that he wanted to leave and be rid of her. He had spiked her interest. She expected him to be the same as everyone else she met, annoying, nice, caring...but he wasn't, and she was glad. Honestly, it was getting annoying. The fact that he treated her like he did made her want to get his name.
She laughed slightly to herself, as if all that he did was funny. "I'm Shaire. Shaire SilverStain. And your right, I did want to be alone. Your pretty smart, you know. It's like you read my mind." She sped up slightly to walk beside him. "All I asked for was your name, and you gave me a story book of how you want to be alone. " She smiled. It didn't annoy her, it didn't upset her, or make her angry. It was like that kind of stuff was in her blood, so she didn't mind.
Her tail flickered behind her as she stepped ever so lightly, almost graceful. For some reason, she seemed like a pup when she walked, happy, so full of life. It must have come from her father, because it certainly didn't come from her mother. Or, maybe it was just something she developed on her own. She smiled wider at him, her canines poking out further than the rest of her teeth.
You could almost say she looked insane with such a goofy grin, but you could tell just by looking into her eyes that she wasn't exactly insane, just odd. Very, very odd.

The future is irrelevant ~ Half of him had expected her to stay where she was and the other half expected she would follow him. He was hoping she would stay, but unfortunately for him he wasn't that lucky. His black fur, which had a few salt and pepper strands here and there, bristled slightly as he sensed her behind him, waiting for the moment she would speak. He knew it was coming. It had to be coming, unless she was planning on stalking him silently. It wouldn't work either way. A sigh of exasperation slipped passed his parted maw and he rolled his crimson eyes skyward as if he expected the Gods to give him some sign that she would leave him alone. It seemed like wherever he went there was someone there to pester him until he reached his breaking point. If this female was smart, she would leave him alone. He had his doubts, though. He wasn't all that lucky anyway. All he had to do was look back into his past and sift through the bad memories to remind him he wasn't that lucky and he would never be that lucky. It was kind of sad really, but he was done and over with it. Well, for the most part.
"Your name is Shaire. Good for you," Kaige replied flatly, still not giving her his name as he continued to move forward at a steady pace. "And if you wanted to be alone, then why don't you go run off to your little spot and leave me alone. That way we're both alone and we're both happy." He gave off another sigh, this one being more exaggerated than anything. He had the feeling this was going to be a long day, especially with her following. His ears brought themselves to his head and he gritted his teeth, his steps becoming slightly quicker and more haughty. "And just for the record, I didn't read your mind." He shot a quick glance in her direction and made a face that was hard to describe, something very unlike him. "But don't think that I can, because I can if I want to," he added, speaking in a way that seemed almost a little immature. "And if you thought that was a story, you're ridiculous. Rude or not, it was supposed to ward you off." His claws began to tear into the ground with each step and his fur bristled more. Would he be free to be by himself?
He was hoping by then she would just stop and turn back, but when he took a glance to where she had previously been, he found her smiling. His expression shifted and a brow rose. "What in the hell is your problem?" he asked, sounding both annoyed and slightly baffled. "Don't you kids know not to talk to strangers?" He didn't know how old she was, but he assumed she was younger than he was. He was immortal after all. He had been around for a good century or two. But what did he know? She could have been as old or older than him. Why was he even thinking about this? Why did he even care? "If you're smart, you'll leave me alone," he said, not speaking after that. He didn't know what her intentions were, why she seemed so interested in him, or why she was even talking to him if she wanted to be left alone. Only time would tell. [/blockquote]

Shaire cocked her head slightly, as if what he said had confused him. But she never quit smiling. He actually amused her. "Alright, I give up, you don't have to tell me your name." She smiled, then thought about what he said and frowned a little. "You know, I doubt we would both be happy whether I left or not. You don't seem very happy at all. Besides, I'm done with wanting to be alone. You know what? Your interesting. There arn't many interesting wolves these days, but you seem very interesting." She was smiling again.
She nearly tripped, and it was obvious, though she easily caught herself. "And I'm not some pup you know. I'm four..." She paused. She must have looked rediculous, trotting to and fro like some sort of pup. "But I guess I may seem younger. You see, I find joy in things easily. I can't help it, I have the heart of a pup. but it keeps me going!" She smiled wide. She glanced up at the darkening sky. "Its going to rain soon...maybe. I don't know, I can't tell the future. I love the rain. It is so...calming. Many wolves find it depressing, but I don't. It may take the sun out of the sky, but it paints the sun on my face." she paused once more and frowned. "Well, I mean, I'm not always happy, ofcourse not. But I never worry! "
Shaire looked over at the wolf. He must have thought she was insane. Oh well, she didn't mind. She felt like being open to this wolf. He seemed sad, maybe even lonely. It was the least she could do to tell him about the rain.
"When I was a pup, I used to play in the rain. Did you ever play in the rain? Well, anyway, I was always leaving the den to jump through the puddles. My mom warned me about staying out in the rain too long, as if I would drown or something. But I never did! And the rain made me smile. How about you? Do you like the rain?" She paused in her story telling and looked at him for a response. Her smile was replaced by a curious look.

The future is irrelevant ~ Good, God. She was really starting to get on his nerves. "Good, because you're not going to get my name. It's nice to see you have some intelligence," Kaige replied rather rudely in hopes to ward her off. Maybe he had to kick it up a notch. Maybe if he unleashed his wrath on her, she would leave him alone. He could try, but what if it didn't work? Why waste all that time for nothing? How would he know if he didn't even try? Wondering about all of this was starting to tear his mind apart and he really didn't feel like going crazy at that moment, but he didn't know if he would be able to stop himself. "I am perfectly happy," he said, his voice rather dull. "I'm so happy, I'm bursting with happiness inside. I'm about to dance in joy because I'm so happy." It was obvious he was being sarcastic and if she couldn't tell, well, then she had problems. "I could care less about you and you not wanting to be alone anymore. And you know what? I'm not interesting, so leave me alone." Seriously, what was her problem? Could she not take a hint?
His muscles were tense as he walked and they were beginning to grow sore. His teeth were gritted together tightly as he resisted the urge to turn around and snap at her. He reminded her of someone he once knew, someone who could be just as annoying as she was. "You're a pup to me," he muttered, feeling his sanity slowly drift away as she continued to ramble on. Her voice was like nails dragging on a chalk board and it was beginning to pick away at his brain. She would not shut up. Was she even possible of keeping quiet for a mere minute? He doubted it. Knowing that lit something up inside. Something inside him clicked and he turned around to face her with such ferocity, it was almost startling. "Look, kid, I don't care that you find joy in things easily. I don't care that you have the heart of a pup. I don't care that you love the rain and find it so calming. I don't care that you never worry." His voice was low, his tone dangerous. His crimson eyes darkened and his lips curled back, revealing the pearly white fangs hidden behind them. He had really had enough of her.
"I don't care about when you were a pup and what you used to do. I don't care what your mother said. I don't care about any of the shit you are telling me," he said, almost laughing because he was beginning to grow angry. He could feel the warmth begin to flow through his veins, but it was no use getting angry. Being pissy and rude with her just didn't seem to work. "In case you haven't noticed, I don't want to chat idly with you. I don't want to be all buddy-buddy with you. I don't want to be your friend. I want you to leave me the hell alone, but you're just... stupid." He couldn't come up with anything, thus sounding rather stupid himself. "So why don't you just shut up and leave me alone? I'll be happy then."
If only he could kill himself. [/blockquote]

Shaire stopped in her tracks, her eyes growing wider the louder her talked, and she just stared into his eyes for a few moments, as if she thought if she looked away, she would be killed. Her tail slipped behind her legs as she crouched closer to the ground. She started to shiver, and then...
She burst out into fits of laughter. "I'm...I'm sorry!" She said, trying to calm her laughter. "Your just...so...cute when your angry!" She didn't mean it in a flirty manner, more like 'that man is so old, he is cute,' or 'that baby just threw up all over you, awww,' or 'that demonic puppy that is trying to kill me has a bow on its head! ADORABLE!" She had to sit down she was laughing so hard. She took a few deep breaths and calmed down. She looked up at him, then smiled once more. "You don't look that old." She said, replying to his earlier comment. "Then again, my mom doesn't look that old, and she is ancient!" she laughed slightly. "Don't tell her I called her that." Her tail wagged slightly behind her. She was definetly finding this amusing. "I'm sorry, but, I just don't scare easily." she shrugged, really meaning that she was sorry.
She suddently went very serious. "Well, um..." She looked at him and realized something. "You remind me...of these stories...oh, never mind. Maybe that's why I wanted to talk to you. Sorry." This time, she was more talking to herself than anyone else. "Any who, you don't seem very happy at all. I'm sorry about that." She glanced over at the sky. "Pups...they love the rain. Most, anyway. They don't have a worry in the world! They don't worry about dying, or being betrayed, or losing someone, all they think about is the rain." Her voice was very calm now, yet very serious. "And they are happy." She turned back to him. "Ever think about, how when a pup becomes an adult, they stop loving the rain. They hide in their dens, trying to avoid it. When do we get too old to play in the rain? I guess, we all just grow up, and the rain becomes something we hate. And then, we worry about things. We become depressed, sorrowful...alone. I don't understand why, when things get harder, we ignore the things that take our pain away. It...its sad."
She glanced down for a moment, but only a moment, then looked back up at him. "When did it stop for you? When did you stop playing in the rain?"
